Collection: Legend of Advent
✨ The Meaning & Tradition of Advent
The tradition of Advent is one of the oldest and most meaningful parts of the Christmas season. Dating back to the 4th and 5th centuries, Advent marks the four weeks leading up to Christmas and symbolises hope, peace, joy, and love. The word Advent comes from the Latin adventus, meaning “coming” — the coming of Christmas and the promise of new light in the world.
🕯️ The Advent Wreath
By the Middle Ages, families began using evergreen wreaths with four candles. Each candle represents a theme of the season, and together they create a warm, growing glow as Christmas draws near. Many wreaths include a fifth white candle, traditionally lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.
📅 Advent Calendars
Advent calendars began in 19th-century Germany, where families marked each day until Christmas with chalk, candles, or devotional cards. Printed Advent calendars appeared in the early 1900s and quickly became a beloved seasonal tradition. Today, they range from classic picture calendars to elaborate keepsake designs.
🎄 A Season of Anticipation
Advent invites us to slow down, savour the season, and enjoy a meaningful countdown to Christmas. Whether through wreath lighting, opening calendar doors, or decorating with greenery and soft candlelight, it’s a celebration of hope and joy.
